[01] GREEK-TURKISH CYPRIOT PARTIES MEET
Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot politicians and Slovak Foreign
Minister Jan Kubis have evaluated the impact of meetings of political
parties on the process of rapprochement between the island`s two
communities.
The leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot
parties have participated in a special bicomunal meeting, organised by
the Slovak embassy here on the occasion of Kubis` visit to Cyprus.
``They have evaluated the impact of the meetings at Ledra Palace on the
process of rapprochement of the politicians and both communities in
Cyprus and exchanged views on this prospect,`` a joint communnique read
out by the Slovak Ambassador to Cyprus Jan Varso said.
The next meeting will be held on the 27th of June.
[02] SPOKESMAN - UNFICYP - RESOLUTION
Cypriot Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas has said that the
government was ``constantly on the alert`` regarding a UN Security
Council draft resolution on the renewal of the mandate of the UN
Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). The government, he noted, is
monitoring developments on a reference to the so-called isolation of
the Turkish Cypriots in a UN report on UNFICYP.
``The government is constantly alert. Cyprus` Permanent Representative
to the UN, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its various
services, are monitoring the situation and doing all which has to be
done in order to secure that which we consider should be secured,`` he
added.
The UN reference was in favour of ending what it called "the isolation"
of the Turkish Cypriot community, through efforts by the international
community. The government of Cyprus maintains that the "isolation" is
the direct result of the continuing Turkish occupation of Cyprus`
northern part and the division of the country, since 1974, when Turkey
invaded.
