Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet
Ali Talat will meet for the first time since Christofias assumed the
Presidency of the Republic, on 21st March.
Jose Luis Diaz, spokesperson of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force
in Cyprus (UNFICYP) told CNA that the date was decided during a meeting
on Wednesday between Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and
Turkish Cypriot leader`s adviser Ozdil Nami at the office of UN
Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus and UNFICYP Chief
of Mission Michael Moller.
He said the two discussed the issue of the opening the Ledra Street
checkpoint and that a great degree of convergence was reached on a
number of issues as well.
Diaz said the UN would issue a statement on the meeting.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and
occupied the islands northern third.

Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou held on Tuesday in
Brussels meetings with the EU High Representative for the Common
Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, EU Commissioner for
Enlargement Olli Rehn and the Albanian Minister of Foreign Affairs
Lulzim Basha.
Kyprianou said that the recent mobility on the Cyprus problem was the
main issue on the agenda of his meeting with Solana. Kyprianou briefed
Solana on the forthcoming meeting between the President of the Republic
of Cyprus Demitris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet
Ali Talat, as well as regarding a visit a UN delegation will pay to
Cyprus, and outlined the positions of the Cyprus government.
