  • [01] BRITISH MINISTER - CYPRUS PROBLEM

British Minister for Europe Jim Murphy has said that the UK wants to see a united, independent, democratic, prosperous and influential Cyprus, member of the European Union, and added that the UK will exercise its responsibility as a guarantor power to the maximum effect in the months and years ahead for reaching a Cyprus solution.

As a guarantor, a leading member of the EU and as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, we have a remarkable responsibility to maintain the momentum that develops on the island itself, he said.

Murphy was speaking at a dinner hosted by the Cypriot National Federation of the UK to exchange views on the prospects of a Cyprus solution. The dinner was also attended by British High Commissioner to Nicosia Peter Millett and Britain`s Special Representative for Cyprus Joan Ryan.
