[01] GREECE DEPUTY FM TURKEY
Greece`s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiades Varvitsiotis has
sent the clear message that relations between Europe and Greece with
Turkey pass through the process for a solution of the Cyprus problem.
Addressing a conference on Greek Foreign Policy in International
Environment, Varvitsiotis called on Turkey to fully adjust to European
criteria and reiterated that the main aim of Greeces policy remains a
political settlement in Cyprus.
With regard to Turkeys European accession course, he said that there
are no blank cheques, noting that Turkey is called on to move ahead
with specific reforms. He added that good-neighborly relations and
respect for international law are required and he pointed out that
Ankara will be judged by the Europeans when the time comes.
[02] ``ARGONAFTIS 2009`` FINAL PHASE
The final phase of the international military exercise Argonaftis 2009
took place on Friday at Naval Base «Lieutenant General Evangelos
Florakis» in Mari, Larnaca.
The scenario of the exercise involved addressing asymmetric threats.
The National Guard, the Fire Service, the Civil Defence, the Special
Unit dealing with catastrophes, the Fisheries Department and various
police departments, such as the anti-terrorist squad, took part at the
exercise.
During the exercise various incidents took places such as an
anti-terrorism operation on a ship occupied by pirates, addressing
pollution because of the terrorist attack on the ship, identification
of illegal immigrants by an aircraft and dealing with them, rescuing
people aboard a ship by a helicopter, rescuing people involved at a
shipwreck by a helicopter and rescuing people from a building and
dealing with a trapped vehicle.
