  • [01] LEADERS MEETING SECOND ROUND

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat held today the first meeting of the second round of the UN-led direct negotiations, which began a year ago, aiming to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem and reunify the country, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974.

The chapter of governance and power sharing and particularly the executive are the first issues President Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat was expected to be discussed at todays meeting.

The second round of direct negotiations, scheduled to begin September 3, was postponed due to the obstacles set by the Turkish Cypriot illegal authorities, which resulted to the cancellation of a pilgrimage of Greek Cypriots to the occupied church of Saint Mamas.

On September 2, Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou had announced that the Turkish regimes behavior towards Greek Cypriot pilgrims who were trying to cross to the Turkish occupied northern areas to celebrate Saint Mamas name day on September 2, casts a shadow over the start of the second round of talks and therefore it would be better to postpone the meeting.

According to a press release issued by the Italian Prime Ministers Office after the working dinner, discussion with President Christofias focused on the negotiation between Cypriots, the main issues which concern bilateral cooperation and main issues on the international agenda. Prime Minister Berlusconi stressed the firm ties between the two countries, their common European and Mediterranean character, the press release said.

    [03] MINISTER - WATER PROTECTION

The protection of water from pollution is of great importance, especially today that we are suffering from water shortages as a result of prolonged drought, the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Michalis Polynikis underlined.

Speaking at the opening of the 2nd European Conference on the Environmental Applications of Advanced Oxidation Processes, organised by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Cyprus, along with the Technical University of Crete and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Polynikis said that pollution control should be continuous and rigorous so as to ensure that the scarce and valuable water is available in such quality that does not jeopardize public health, the fauna, the flora and the environment in general.

A well protected environment from pollution ensures the best quality of our water and of our soil he added.

As Polynikis noted, by implementing the Law on the Control of Pollution of Water and Soil and the Law on the Protection and Management of Water, Cyprus is committed to reducing and controlling the pollution of water and soil, to improve and protect natural water resources and to improve the health and the welfare of the population.
