[01] CYPRIOT FM STATEMENT
Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou has made clear
that Cyprus will not consent to the opening of negotiating chapters in
Turkey`s EU accession course, if Turkey does not make progress with
regard to the obligations it assumed towards the Republic of Cyprus.
Kyprianou`s remarks came in response to a statement by Turkey`s State
Minister and Chief Negotiator with the EU Egemen Bagis, as quoted by
Anadolu News Agency, that efforts will intensify for the opening of the
chapters of Education and Culture, and Energy as part of Turkey`s EU
bid.
Invited by CNA to comment on Bagis` statements, Kyprianou recalled
Cyprus` ``clear and official position`` announced during the EU
December 2009 General Affairs and External Relations Council regarding
six negotiating chapters, in which Energy, and Education and Culture
are included.
``According to our view, the Republic of Cyprus will not agree to
progress in these chapters if Turkey does not meet its obligations with
regard to Cyprus and especially the obligations mentioned in the EU
declaration of 2005.``
