  • [01] ACTING PRESIDENT OCCUPIED AREAS CENSUS

Acting President of the Republic and President of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has expressed the wish that the UN continue their efforts so that the Turkish side finally proceeds with a population census in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

In statements on the sidelines of a pupils parade held in Nicosia to celebrate the 25th of March 1821, the Greek Revolution Day, Garoyian said that a population census in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus would show the real numbers of Turkish illegal settlers brought to Cyprus by Turkey after its 1974 invasion of Cyprus, to change the demographic structure of the island.

Expressing the wish that the census is carried out the soonest possible, Garoyian said that this constitutes a firm position of the Greek Cypriot side.

On Wednesday, President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias had submitted during the UN led Cyprus talks a precise proposal for a population census to be carried out in both communities that will be monitored by the United Nations and under its aegis. The Turkish Cypriot side has expressed its opposition towards such action.

Referring to the Cyprus talks, Garoyian said that the Turkish side insists on its intransigent positions, which aim to create those conditions that would allow Ankara to fulfil its goals in Cyprus, that is to upgrade its self styled regime in the Turkish occupied areas, to impose new fait accompli or to push for an international conference to take place on Cyprus that would lead to a new Burgenstock.

He recalled that the position of the Greek Cypriot side is that an international conference on Cyprus could only take place when the two sides are within range of an agreement on the internal aspects of the Cyprus problem.

The international conference, he added, could then take place to discuss issues concerning security, illegal settlers and occupation forces.

The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since May 2004, is divided by the Turkish army. Around 37% of Cyprus territory (situated in the northern areas) is occupied since the Turkish invasion against the island in the summer of 1974.

UN - led Cyprus talks are underway since September 2008 between President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Dervis Eroglu, aiming at reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem.

    [02] CYPRUS GREEK NATIONAL DAY

Cyprus commemorated Friday with various events the 25th of March 1821, when the Greek Revolution officially started aiming to free Greece from 400 years of Ottoman occupation.

In Nicosia, Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II led a doxology at the Faneromeni Church in the presence of Acting President of the Republic of Cyprus and House President Marios Garoyian, Greek Minister of State Haris Pamboukis, Greeces Ambassador in Nicosia Vassilios Papaioannou, members of the Council of Ministers, Cypriot Members of the Parliament, Cypriot Members of the European Parliament, government and party officials, as well as other diplomats.

After the doxology, a puplis parade was held in front of the Greek Embassy in Nicosia. Speaking after the parade, Garoyian said that the message of the Greek Revolution inspires Cyprus struggle to free itself from the Turkish occupation and reunify the country, its institutions and its economy. In his statement, Greek Minister Pamboukis, who represented the Greek government at the celebrations in Cyprus, said that the Greek Revolution Day symbolizes the struggle of all people for freedom.

    [03] PARLIAMENT ECAA RATIFICATION

The House of Representatives has approved unanimously the multilateral agreement on European Common Aviation Area between the member states of the European Union and the Republics of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Iceland, Montenegro, Serbia, the Kingdom of Norway, Romania, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo.

The text of the agreement will be accompanied by a separate declaration of the Republic of Cyprus, clarifying that the ratification and implementation should not be construed as recognition of Kosovo by the Republic of Cyprus.

According to the Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus the ratification of the multilateral agreement will not affect or change the status quo of the Interim Administration in Kosovo.
