  • [01] Opposition DISY leader says he is ready to run for President of Cyprus

Nicos Anastasiades, President of the Cypriot main opposition party, Democratic Rally (DISY), announced he is ready to seek election to the Cypriot Presidency, one year before the presidential elections of February 2013.

``At these critical hours, I feel ready to seek the office of the President of the Republic of Cyprus,`` Anastasiades said speaking during the 14th party conference held on Saturday in Nicosia.

``I feel competent to lead a long march for a Cyprus free from occupation troops, a reunited country which would guarantee a creative and peaceful cohabitation and prosperity for all its legal inhabitants,`` he said, adding he is determined ``in collaboration with all political forces to work hard for the reconstruction and modernization of our state.``

[02] Defence Minister: Cyprus will exercise its sovereign rights

Cyprus will exercise its sovereign rights with dedication to legality Defence Minister Demetris Eliades has said Saturday, speaking after a memorial service held in honor of the officers and soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

The memorial service took place at Makedonitissas Military Cemetery, in Nicosia, in the presence of Archbishop Chrysostomos II, Patriarch Theofilos III of Jerusalem, the Defence Minister and Chief of the National Guard Lieutenant Stylianos Nases.

Asked if there have been threats by Turkey, in view of the start of the second round of licensing for hydrocarbon research within Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Eliades said that Cyprus` safety is not at stake at the present time.

Cyprus, he added, will exercise its sovereign rights, fully respecting the rules of the international law and the international legal order and in this way we will proceed with dedication to legality and determined to exercise our sovereign rights, the Minister pointed out.
