[01] Henderson: Cyprus accession to EU not conditional on Turkish Cypriot participation

"The British Government wants to see very much a resolution to the divisions within Cyprus so that it is the whole island of Cyprus which would be acceding to the EU which then offers that greater opportunity for everyone who lives on the island", British Deputy Foreign Minister for European ^Àffairs, Doug Henderson stated yesterday.

Speaking at the inauguration of a photographic exhibition on "Cyprus and its European perspectives" in the House of Commons. Mr. Henderson stressed that Cyprus' accession to EU is not conditional on Turkish Cypriot participation.

The British government and the EU would like to see a brother representation in the negotiating committee but if that is not possible for reasons which I think most people here will recognise then we have to proceed as best as we can at the moment" he said.

In his speech he expressed satisfaction with the fact that Cyprus is included in the six countries which started accession negotiations with the EU. He pointed out that the economic, social and cultural richness of Cypriot life could make a contribution to the EU.

Moreover the Deputy Foreign Minister praised the hard work that is currently being done both by negotiators from Cyprus and by the EU officials in order to harmonise Cyprus legislation with the acquis communautaire and expressed the hope that "that hard work can lead to a very successful future for the island".
