[03] Seminar stresses the importance of developing the audio-visual and television sectors

"Cyprus as a future member of the European Union gives particular emphasis to the development of technical infrastructure and expertise in the audio- visual and television sectors and maintains close co-operation with European countries and international organisations," the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior , Mr. Thanos Michael said yesterday.

He was speaking on behalf of the Minister of Interior at a two day seminar, organised by Eureka Audiovisual and the Press and Information Office.

[04] Violation of Cyprus' airspace by Turkish military aircraft

The Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zackheos has strongly protested to the UN against a new violation of the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus and of the flight information region of Nicosia by Turkish military aircraft on 8 October 1998.

In a letter dated 9 October, addressed to the United Nations Secretary General, the Cyprus Ambassador stressed that, these provocative acts by Turkey against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus are in blatant disregard of international law, the UN Charter and the relevant UN decisions on Cyprus.

Mr Zackheos also stated that the continuing overflights by the Turkish Air Force and the presence of the Turkish military occupation forces on the island constitute the underlying causes of tension in Cyprus.
