[01] Foreign Minister addresses ministerial meeting of Non-Aligned Movement

"It will be an affront to international law and to you all fellow members of the Non-Aligned Movement if the faits accomplis created by the use of force or by secession were to be accepted", Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides stated yesterday.

Addressing the Non Aligned Movement ministerial meeting, held in New York, Mr Kasoulides pointed out that for the last 26 years, the Cyprus government has spared no effort in the search for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

"With good will and determination we have been working for a peaceful, negotiated, solution within the parameters established by the Security Council resolutions, a solution that will allow the reunification of our country and its people, will safeguard the human rights of all its citizens and terminate the foreign occupation of our territory," he said.

The government's participation in the current round of UN-sponsored talks "takes place on the basis of UN resolutions and the international legitimacy, which in no way can be compromised", he said, noting that the international community has defined the parameters within which a solution of the problem can be reached.

Mr Kasoulides expressed the government's gratitude for the solidarity and support of the Non-Aligned Movement, in Cyprus' struggle to find a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem.

"Cyprus, which is currently negotiating its terms of accession into the European Union, has no intention to forfeit its traditional bonds with the Non-Aligned Movement", he said.

"On the contrary, in our future capacity, as a member of the European Family, we wish to be one of the links between the Non-Aligned countries and the member states of the European Union, thus serving as a bridge for cooperation and understanding", he concluded.
