[01] Simitis: idea of confederation will never be accepted
The Greek government's aim is for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus
problem, which envisages a bizonal bicommunal Republic of Cyprus with a
single sovereignty, based on the United Nations resolutions.
The above was stated by the Prime Minister of Greece Mr Costas Simitis, in
his speech at the meeting of the Parliamentary Group of the Greek Socialist
Party Pasok on 4 October.
Mr Simitis also stressed that the Greek and Cyprus governments will never
accept the idea of confederation.
The Prime Minister said that the Greek government would always provide
support to President Clerides in his negotiating efforts. He also added
that relations between Athens and Nicosia are and will continue to be very
strong.
[02] Cyprus and Egypt sign cooperation agreement
Cyprus and Egypt have signed a cooperation agreement in the fields of
public health and medical science.
The agreement was signed on 4 October in Cairo by the Permanent Secretary
of the Ministry of Health Mr Symeon Matsis on behalf of the Republic of
Cyprus, and the Egyptian Health Minister Mr Ismail Sallam on behalf of
Egypt.
The agreement provides for the exchange of information and specialists in
various fields of medicine, the development of cooperation between the two
countries' foundations and organisations, and the coordination of action by
both governments at an international level and especially with regard to
the World Health Organisation.
