[01] UN report is revised

The UN has reissued a report on human rights in Cyprus, rectifying terminology for which the Cyprus government had made strong representations.

The general content of the report, first published on 20 February, has remained intact but there are changes on three different occasions where there is a clear reference to the government of Cyprus and not to Greek Cypriot authorities as the original text said.

Welcoming the revision, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou in a written statement said:

"The new corrected issue of the UN Human Rights report on Cyprus restores the right situation as regards the description and the status of the parties involved and re-establishes the explicit reference to the Republic of Cyprus, something that complies fully with all the UN Security Council Resolutions for Cyprus".

[02] Three new ambassadors present credentials

Three new ambassadors presented their credentials to President Clerides in separate ceremonies yesterday.

Austria's new ambassador Rene Pollitzer expressed his country's concern that the UN-sponsored talks for a settlement on the island have been discontinued since last November, expressing the hope that a resumption of these talks will be possible soon. He also expressed Austria's strong support for European Union enlargement and noted with satisfaction that the accession negotiations with Cyprus "are making swift progress in many areas."

Nigeria's new ambassador George Obiozor, referred to the traditionally close relations between Cyprus and Nigeria, saying they had a lot in common both being members of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Commonwealth but also on a business level.

The ambassador for the People's Republic of Korea Jang Myong Son said praised the achievements made towards unification, demilitarisation and termination of the division of the island as well as towards development of the nation's economy and productivity.

[03] Joint Cyprus-EU Parliamentary Committee calls for protection of Akamas

The protection of the environment was amongst the issues discussed at a meeting of the Cyprus-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee yesterday.

A resolution approved unanimously called on the government to take measures to protect the unique beauty of the Akamas peninsula until it decides on how the region is to be managed, while at the same time taking into consideration the welfare of the surrounding communities.

The meeting also discussed the progress achieved so far in Cyprus' accession negotiations.

The meeting completed its deliberations yesterday with a joint press conference held by co-chairpersons Mechtild Rothe and Tasos Papadopoulos.
