Cyprus problem discussed at the 40th Association Council of the EU and TurkeyThe solution to the Cyprus problem will undoubtedly assist in Cyprus' efforts to join the Union, however, this is not a pre-condition for the island's accession, the Swedish Foreign Minister and President of the Council of the EU, Anna Lindh, stated during her speech at the 40th Association Council of the EU and Turkey which took place in Luxembourg on 26 June 2001.
The EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, speaking during a press conference, stated that clearly the EU would prefer to see the solution to the Cyprus problem before the island's accession to the Union and for this reason the Union calls upon the Turkish Cypriots to participate in the proximity talks under the auspices of the United Nations.
