[01] President Clerides and Mr Denktash continue talks on the Cyprus problem

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Rauf Denktash had their eighth meeting on Friday February 1, 2002 in Nicosia, in the presence of the UN Secretary General's Special Advisor for Cyprus, Mr Alvaro de Soto. The members of the delegation of each side were also present at the meeting.

The regular meetings between President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Denktash are taking place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, under the aegis of the United Nations, in the framework of direct talks for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

An additional meeting between the two sides was held at 4.00 pm on Thursday, 31st January, with a view to speed up the process of the talks. The UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Mr Alvaro De Soto as well as the advisers of the two interlocutors attended the meeting.

Another meeting between President Clerides and Mr Denktash is scheduled to take place this afternoon at 5pm.
