President Clerides meets with the Vice-President of the European Affairs Committee of the French National AssemblyThe President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides received yesterday the Vice-President of the European Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly Mr Maurice Ligot, who is currently in Cyprus to prepare a report on Cyprus' EU accession course.
In a statement to the press after the meeting Mr Ligot said that President Clerides briefed him on the direct talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem and the island's accession talks with the European Union. Mr Ligot noted that the President naturally referred to the difficult problem of the reunification of the island and to the direct talks on the Cyprus issue, which do not seem to move forward and this seems rather discouraging.
Referring to Cyprus' EU accession course Mr Ligot, expressed the belief that the accession negotiations will be successfully concluded, that Cyprus will accede to the EU at the proper time and that it will find an equal place in the European Union together with the rest of the EU member states.
Finally, Mr Ligot said he believed that, as the convention on the future of the European Union would strengthen the authority and power of the European Union, so an empowered European Union would also strengthen Cyprus' position.
The French parliamentarian also met with the President of the House of Representatives Mr Demitris Christofias.
