    [01] Cyprus and Greek Foreign Ministries coordinate future cooperation

    The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Georgios Iacovou, met yesterday with Greece's Alternate Foreign Minister, Mr Tasos Yiannitsis, who is in Cyprus for a two-day working visit heading a multi-member delegation. Speaking after the meeting, Mr Iacovou said the talks with Mr Yiannitsis and the Greek delegation had focused on future planning and cooperation covering the period until the end of 2004, starting from the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council which would take place on Monday, the European Council in December, and the celebrations the Cyprus Government was planning for the official accession of the island to the EU on 1 May 2004. "We discussed the prospects regarding the voting process in the occupied areas, the possibilities of resuming the bicommunal talks and prospects for their success in the future and after the second half of 2004, if no solution is found in the meantime", Mr Iacovou added. The Foreign Minister further said that they had discussed issues concerning consular cooperation, and in particular the issuing of visas as of 1 January 2004, noting Greece's willingness to assist Cyprus in every field. Greece's Alternate Foreign Minister, Mr Yiannitsis, expressed the position that the Cyprus issue and the excellent progress achieved by Cyprus in implementing the acquis communautaire would be included in the conclusions of the General Affairs Council meeting on Monday as well as in future Council meetings. Mr Yiannitsis was received this morning by the President of the Republic, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos and the House President, Mr Demetris Christofias.

    [02] Cyprus to participate in EU-NATO management exercise

    Cyprus will participate, with the status of 'Active Observer', in the EU- NATO Common Management Exercise (CME/CMX03), to be held in Brussels and the capitals of the EU member states on 19-25 November 2003. The goal of the exercise is to test the structures as regards negotiations and cooperation between the European Union and NATO during periods of crisis. The Cypriot delegation will comprise six persons from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Justice and Public Order and Interior, and Cyprus' Permanent Delegation to the EU.

    [03] Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Nassiriya terrorist attack

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus condemns the terrorist attack in Nassiriya, which resulted in the death of several people at an Italian Carabinieri barracks. On behalf of the Government and the people of Cyprus, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to extend to the Italian government, the Italian people and the families of the victims its deepest condolences and sympathy.
