Denktash, Hasipoglu meet Turkey/s MirzaogluAnatolia Agency (9:43 hours, 28.5.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and Ertugrul Hasipoglu, the so-called parliament speaker, met on Saturtday with Turkish State Minister Ramazan Mirzaoglu, who is paying a visit to "TRNC" to join the opening ceremony of the "TRNC Representation of State Statistics Institute (TSE)".
Denktash said that such cooperation is important for their future, and that he believes the TSE/s opening a representation in "TRNC" will facilitate the entrance of the "TRNC" products in Turkey through the customs.
Denktash noted that there is monetary union between the pseudostate and Turkey and the unification of the standards was a cooperation they have always desired.
Hasipoglu said that they hope that the "TRNC" products having TSE stamp can enter into Turkey more easily.
Mirzaoglu emphasized that the economic problems in "TRNC" are transitory and that Turkey had earlier faced similar problems.
Echinococcus spreading dangerouslyKIBRIS (20.5.00) reports under the banner headlines "Thousand people with echinococcus" and says that a team of doctors in the occupied area carried out a research on echinococcus.
The paper reports that the result of the research showed that the situation is very dangerous and one of the researchers, Dr. Mehmet Inan, urged the occupation regime to declare a state of emergency to fight echinococcus, because, he said, there is a possibility that a total of 3500 people in the occupied area will be infected.
He further said that 2480 people were examined, 43 of which were found carrying echinococcus. He said that this corresponds to 1.73% of the population.
He said that this figure for Germany is 0.19%, for Brazil 0.55%, for Bulgaria 0.33%, for Jordan 0.59% and for Uruguay 1.6%. He further said that in the occupied Nicosia area 30.3% of the sheep and 13.16% of the beef were carriers of echinococcus. In the occupied Famagusta area, the figures are 46.0% among beef and 71.1% among sheep. Dr. Inan strongly criticized the occupation officials for turning a blind eye to this very serious issue and said: "They are trying to use the press to run a show, alleging that it is not an important issue".
Referring to misuse of UNOPS funds to fight against the disease, Dr Inan said that he heard that some of the officials used the UNOPS funds for other purposes. However, he said, he is not in a position to tell the real dimensions of the issue.
Dr. Inan warned that the situation is very serious and urged to take urgent measures.

Indirect negotiation at third round of talksMete Tumerkan writing in HURRIYET KIBRIS (29.5.00) claims that a new method will be followed at the third round of talks to be resumed on 5 July in Geneva.
He says that at the third round of talks the "indirect negotiation method" will be introduced in which the sides will be able to put forward their views either orally or in writing to UN officials and they in turn will convey these views to the other side. Until now the UN mediators listened to the sides but did not convey the views to the other side. He says that despite the change in the method of carrying out the talks, there will be no change regarding the subjects under discussion.
Tumerkan further says that the Turkish side will put on the table new proposals at the third round of talks. The new proposals are based on a confederal settlement. He claims that the Greek Cypriot side is worried about these new proposals.
