BRUSSELS - European Union foreign ministers hit back at tough U.S. anti-Cuba
trade laws due to come into effect on Tuesday, agreeing on Monday on a wide
range of retaliatory measures to be taken against Washington.
[02] Greece to lift veto on MEDA funds
BRUSSELS - Greece agreed in principle on Monday to lift its veto on a European
Union programme that will pump $3.7 billion into the southern Mediterranean
region, EU diplomats said.

BRUSSELS - EU foreign ministers on Monday welcomed President Boris Yeltsin's
big victory in Russia's presidential elections this month, but expressed worry
over the resumption of fighting in Chechnya.

BRUSSELS - European Union foreign ministers sought on Monday to find a way to
force Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic out of political life without
jeopardising elections due to be held in mid-September.

BRUSSELS - European Union foreign ministers on Monday appointed a Briton, Sir
Martin Garrod, to replace Spaniard Ricardo Perez Casado as EU administrator in
the divided Bosnian city of Mostar, EU diplomats said.

BRUSSELS - European Union foreign ministers said on Monday that progress had
been made in bilateral economic talks with Switzerland and urged the European
Commission to keep up the pace of negotiations.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday that it planned to step up
its efforts to police Europe's telecommunications markets to ensure that the
traditional phone monopolies are loosening their grip.

BRUSSELS - The European Union's efforts to create a pan-European telecommunications
market could suffer if it does not find new mechanisms for making joint
decisions, Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Monday.
[09] Beef production reform/Fischler
STRASBOURG - A calf slaughter programme and the introduction of intervention
for store cattle are essential if the EU is to reduce surplus beef production,
Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler said on Monday. In BRUSSELS, a trade source
said that a compulsory calf slaughter programme to take around 858,000 animals
a year out of EU beef production will be put to the Commission on Wednesday.
[10] U.S. lifts anti-EU tariffs
GENEVA - The United States, in a surprise move at the World Trade
Organisation, announced on Monday it had lifted decade-old tariffs on food and
drink imports from the European Union imposed over an EU ban on hormone-
treated beef. In BRUSSELS, the European Commission reacted cautiously to the
announcement.
[11] Russia, Ukraine magnesium duties
BRUSSELS - The European Union has fixed definitive anti-dumping duties,
effective from Monday, on imports of unwrought pure magnesium from Russia and
Ukraine, the EU's Official Journal said.
[12] EU to probe state's aid to Vulkan
MUNICH, Germany - European Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert plans to
investigate subsidies granted by the north German city state of Bremen to
bankrupt shipbuilder Bremer Vulkan AG, Focus magazine said.
[13] EU clears Lucas/Varity merger
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it had approved the merger
of Lucas Industries and Varity Corporation.

BRUSSELS - EU foreign ministers meeting resumes at 0700 GMT (second of two
days); third association councils with Hungary and Poland; EU foreign and
trade ministers are to discuss what counter-measures to take should Clinton
decide not to waive part of the controversial Helms-Burton law on Cuba.
BRUSSELS - Dominican Republic President-elect Leonel Fernandez-Reyna meets
Commissioner Marin at 0830 GMT.
STRASBOURG - European Parliament plenary session begins at 0700 GMT (second of
five days); Commission President Santer makes statement on the BSE situation
at 0845 GMT, EP President Klaus Haensch holds news conference on the inter-
governmental conference (IGC) at 1030 GMT.
STRASBOURG - Commissioners Fischler, Papoutsis and Kinnock attend EP Budgets,
