[01] Fight Against Terrorism: stepping up Europe’s capability to protect
citizens against the threat of terrorism
Today, the Commission adopted a new package of proposals aimed at improving
the EU’s capabilities in the fight against terrorism. The package
contains a series of proposals dealing with the criminalization of
terrorist training, recruitment and public provocation to commit terrorist
offences, the prevention of the use of explosives by terrorists and the use
of airline passenger information in law enforcement investigations. It also
contains a report on the implementation of one of the key legal instruments
of the EU’s counter terrorism arsenal.
[02] € 510 million for restructuring and conversion of vineyards
The Commission has agreed to an indicative budget of € 510 million to
wine producing Member States for the restructuring and conversion of
vineyards in the 2007/2008 marketing year. The objective of this system is
the adaptation of production to market demand. It covers the following
measures: varietal conversion, relocation of vineyards and improvements to
vineyard management techniques. The system does not cover the normal
renewal of vineyards which have come to the end of their natural life.
[03] Nicaragua: La Commission octroie 5 M € d'aide humanitaire pour les
victimes de l'ouragan Félix
La Commission européenne a adopté une nouvelle décision d'urgence de 5
millions d'euros en faveur des victimes de l'ouragan Félix qui a frappé
le Nicaragua le 4 septembre 2007. La Commission européenne a réagi
rapidement après l'ouragan et dans les jours qui ont suivi le désastre,
une décision de première urgence pour un million d'euros était signée
par Louis Michel, le Commissaire européen en charge de l'Aide Humanitaire
et du Développement, pour des opérations d'aide d'urgence. Cependant, des
besoins subsistent et une aide est encore nécessaire. Les fonds sont
gérés par le département d'Aide Humanitaire de la Commission européenne
(ECHO) sous la responsabilité du Commissaire Louis Michel.
[04] European Commission provides €2 million in humanitarian aid to flood
victims in Vietnam
The European Commission provides €2 million for humanitarian relief to up
to 200,000 of the victims of recent floods in northern and central Vietnam.
Food, safe drinking water, jerrycans, blankets, and seeds to replace lost
crops are among the support provided with these funds by international non-
governmental organizations and the Red Cross in the next 6 months. The
funds will be channeled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid
department (ECHO), under the responsibility of Commissioner Michel.
[05] Joe Borg pays a visit to China
European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, Joe Borg, leaves
today for a six-day tour of China. During his visit, Commissioner Borg will
meet with several key Chinese Ministers to discuss cooperation between the
European Union and China on maritime matters both bilaterally and in
international bodies such as the United Nations, FAO, Regional Fisheries
Management Organisations and WTO. Commissioner Borg will present the EU's
new initiatives in the marine and maritime fields ranging from the
development of an integrated Maritime Policy for the Union to measures to
eliminate illegal fishing and to protect vulnerable deep sea ecosystems
from destructive fishing practices. As well as meeting Chinese ministers in
Beijing, Commissioner Borg will also deliver speeches and answer questions
at the Ocean University of China in Qingdao and Shanghai Fishery
University.
[06] Cohesion policy: Commission delivers on commitment to strong support
for development in Northern Ireland
The European Commission today adopted three programmes involving Northern
Ireland as part of Cohesion policy for 2007-2013. This follows Commission
President Jose Manuel Barroso and Commissioner for regional policy Danuta
Hübner's commitment that the European Union would continue to strongly
support Northern Ireland in this new phase of its peace and reconciliation
process. A special European Commission task force has been set up to this
end. EU investment worth €724 million will be made available through the
three programmes: the PEACE III programme; the cross-border co-operation
programme with Ireland and Scotland; and the Regional Competitiveness and
Employment programme for the province.
[07] Commission clears acquisition of D&G by Advent
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Domestic & General Group
PLC (D&G) of the UK by Advent International Corporation (Advent) of the US.
Advent is a private equity company. D&G provides breakdown protection
insurance on domestic appliances, pet health insurance and call centre,
mailing and other services to businesses. The operation was examined under
the simplified merger review procedure.
[08] Commission clears joint venture between PSA and IPH
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the joint venture between PSA Europe Pte Ltd, an affiliate of
PSA International Pte Ltd of Singapore and IPH (Jersey) Limited. PSA owns
and operates various container terminal ports around the world. IPH is a
newly formed company that will invest, own and operate small and medium
sized shipping ports. The joint venture will develop and operate a
container terminal at Great Yarmouth in the UK. The operation was examined
under the simplified merger review procedure.
[09] Industrial producer prices up by 0.4% in both euro area and EU27
In September 2007 compared with August 2007, the industrial producer price
index rose by 0.4% in both the euro area (EA13) and the EU272. In August,
prices increased by 0.1% in both zones.n In September 2007 compared with
September 2006, industrial producer prices gained 2.7% in both the euro
area and the EU27.
These figures come from Eurostat.

la zone euro et avait progressé de 0,3% dans l’UE27. En septembre 20074,
par rapport à septembre 2006, l’indice des ventes a augmenté de 1,6%
dans la zone euro et de 3,5% dans l’UE27. Ces premières estimations sont
publiées par Eurostat.

La Commission européenne prend une décision de première urgence de
1,5 million EUR en faveur des victimes des inondations causées par les
pluies torrentielles qui ont suivi la tempête tropicale Noël en
République Dominicaine. Les fonds sont gérés par le département d'aide
humanitaire de la Commission, sous la responsabilité du Commissaire Louis
Michel. Ils permettront de faire face aux besoins immédiats de près de
100 000 personnes dans les zones les plus touchées par les inondations.
