Scattered cloud is forecast throughout Greece on Easter Sunday, turning to rain and storms in the west, Thessaly, Macedonia, Thrace and islands in the northern and eastern Aegean. The adverse weather will ease off later in the day. Likely to see showers are the eastern mainland, Evia and the eastern Peloponnese. Light snowfall is expected on high ground in northern and central Greece. Temperatures in the north will range from 2C to 10C; on the rest of the mainland and in the Ionian from 6C to 15C; and in the Aegean islands from 10C to 17C. Showery in Athens with temperatures between 9C and 15C. Same in Thessaloniki with the likelihood of a storm, and temperatures from 6C to 10C.

    [02] Easter-Procession-Accident

    14/04/2001 18:31:12

Eight people were injured, three of them seriously, when a car skidded through a candlelit Easter procession in a village near the northern town of Serres, police said on Saturday.

The three worshippers who sustained serious injuries, among them an eight-year-old boy and a 70-year-old pensioner, were taken to hospital for treatment. The remaining five casualties received first aid from a local medical centre.

The driver of the car was identified as Athanasios Xefteris, a 20-year-old student.

Xefteris apparently lost control of the vehicle, hitting one worshipper after another. The car crashed to a halt when it hit a concrete post.

Police are investigating the causes of the accident.

JERUSALEM (ANA/Maria Papoutsaki)- Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Alexandros Voulgaris is visiting Jerusalem to represent the government at Greek Orthodox Easter celebrations in the holy city.

Voulgaris, who flew to Jerusalem on Friday, is heading an official delegation including cabinet secretary Socrates Kosmidis.

A new Greek Orthodox patriarch for Jerusalem is due for election by the end of April after the death of Diodorus at the end of last year.

The Holy Light was due to arrive in Athens by air from Jerusalem on Saturday, in an annual Easter ritual.
