  • [01] Intensive consultations on new measures

Prime minister George Papandreou was holding on Friday consecutive consultations with his top ministers on the progress in the negotiations with a visiting delegation of the so-called "troika" of the European Commission, European Central Bank (ECB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) on a new package of harsh economic measures expected to be announced in the coming days, while in Brussels Commisioner for economic and monetary affairs Olli Rehn's spokesman said that completion of the intensive negotations in Athens on the conditions of the EU support package to Greece was "visible".

    [02] Eurogroup meets Sunday

Brussels (ANA-MPA) -- Eurogroup president Jean-Claude Juncker, prime minister of Luxembourg, has called an emergency meeting of eurozone finance ministers on Sunday, at 5:00 p.m. Greek time, to take decisions on the EU support mechanism for the Greek economy, a spokesman for Juncker announced in the Belgian capital on Friday.

The spokesman said that the ministers will discuss the outcome of the currently ongoing negotiations in Athens between a team of the so-called "troika" comprising European Commission, European Central Bank (ECB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) officials with the Greek authorities.

Junker and EU Commissioner for economic and monetary affairs Olli Rehn will hold a joint press conference after the meeting.

[03] FinMin: Very close to agreement

Finance minister George Papaconstantinou said on Friday that "we are very close" to agreement on the EU support mechanism for the Greek economy, adding that the government "will do whatever necessary for the country's salvation".

Addressing an Economist international conference in Athens, Papaconstantinou said that the government is pushing forward a three-year program of reforms and harsh adjustment so that the country will have no immediate borrowing problem.

But even more so, the program will give Greece the ease, without the daily anxiety of the fluctuations on the international markets, to kick-start the major changes necessary, the minister added.

"We are determined to take the decisions that will determine Greece's course in the coming years and the future of the next generations," Papaconstantinou stressed.

He said that if this discussion had taken place two months ago, the sum of the assistance would have been smaller and the actions that Greece needed to take would also have been smaller. "The measures announced in March proved insufficient, on the one had due to the deficit and on the other to the fact that the time we thought we had at our disposal proved much less," he said.

In all cases, he assured, the government will protect the vulnerable and will not allow their marginalisation.

"But it is necessary to contain the deficit and the debt and restore our country's credibility," he stressed.

    [04] Nimetz briefs UN Sec.Gen

New York (ANA-MPA) -- UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon met in New York on Thursday with his personal emissary in the FYROM name talks, Ambassador Matthew Nimetz, to discuss the current state of the talks, according to an announcement by the secretary general's spokesman.

The announcement noted that Nimetz met separately in the past week with the FYROM negotiator Ambassador Zoran Jolevski and Greek negotiator Ambassador Adamantios Vassilakis, in the framework of the talks between the two sides, in order to hear their views on the current status of the talks.

    [05] Karatzaferis in Cyprus

Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) leader George Karatzaferis arrived in Nicosia on Friday afternoon on a two-day visit to Cyprus.

While in Nicosia, Karatzaferis will have meetings with the political leadership of Cyprus.

On Friday evening, the LAOS leader is due to meet with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias.
