  • [01] PM: Gov't will respect deliberation outcome

Athens (ANA-MPA) -- Prime minister George Papandreou assured that his PASOK government will respect the outcome of the deliberation with the social partners and desires consensus, speaking after a Cabinet session to a meeting that was attended by the leaders of the General Confederation of Workers of Greece (GSEE) and the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen and Merchants (GSEBEE), finance minister George Papaconstantinou, employment minister Andreas Loverdos and several PASOK MPs responsible for labor and social security issues.

The meeting, at PASOK's office in parliament, took place in the context of the PASOK Political Council's decision for a broad dialogue with the social agencies.

The meeting focused on a review of the situation in the labor and social security fields, while various related proposals and recommendations were also examined.

[02] ND elects new secretary, VPs on Friday

Athens (ANA-MPA) -- The main opposition New Democracy (ND) party's new Political Committee that emerged from the party's 8th regular Congress over the weekend meets on Friday, chaired by party leader Antonis Samaras, to elect the party's new secretary, the two new posts of party vice-presidents, and a 7-member Executive Secretariat, which replaces the up-to-now Political Council.

The new ND secretary is expected to be Andreas Lykourentzos, who is the only candidate, while the two party vice-presidents are expected to be former ministers Dimitris Avramopoulos and Stavros Dimas, who have been nominated by party leader Antonis Samaras.

The duties of the two vice-presidents are due to be announced before July 7, when ND is slated to unveil its positions for the country's exodus from the crisis and its disengagement from the EU-IMF Memorandum. According to sources, however, Avramopoulos, a career diplomat, will assume the portfolios of foreign and defence policy, ND's international relations, and public administration and security, while Dimas, a former EU Commissioner, will take on the portfolios of the economy and development, as well as the environment, energy and transports.
