  • [01] Greece backs independent Palestinian state

ANA-MPA/Greece steadfastly backs the creation of an independent, viable and democratic Palestinian state that will coexist peacefully with Israel, within internationally-recognised borders based on the pre-1967 line, prime minister George Papandreou reaffirmed on Wednesday after talks with visiting Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas, adding that Greece remains dedicated to a comprehensive solution to the Arab-Israeli dispute.

Papandreou, in statements to the press after the meeting, said that Abbas was actively showing the way to peace and security in the region, "which is, precisely, the creation of a Palestinian state".

Greece, he added, will continue to stand by and aid the efforts of Palestine and the Palestinian people for a just and viable solution that will facilitate a comprehensive settlement of the Middle East issue.ana-mpa

The Arab peace initiative continues to be an important tool for achieving that goal, Papandreou said, stressing that Greece, which maintains friendly relations with all the countries of the region, is prepared to contribute to the peace process both now and in the future.

Papandreou also announced that Greece will undertake an initiative for the creation of a regional firefighting force in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean, in agreement with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas, adding that the relevant authorities of Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and Russia, in addition to Palestine and Israel, will be invited to join the initiative.

[02] Strauss-Kahn speaks in Greek parliament

Ana-Mpa/International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, briefing the Greek Parliament's Economy Committee on Tuesday, considered the possibility of the extension of the loan's repayment time without new terms as being a foregone conclusion, but in parallel stressed the need for structural reforms with salary and pension cuts since, as he said, there is no other way for productivity to be balanced.ana-mpa

Strauss-Kahn pointed out that although achieving the target of fiscal restructuring is diffucult, however there are many sectors in which expenditure cutbacks can take place and appeared convinced that if the measures proposed by the IMF are implemented without deviations then the programme will be crowned with success, calling on all the parties to support it.ana-mpa

He claimed that Greece had no other choice since, as he said, "in May when it resorted to the IMF it was on the cliff's edge" and stressed that the success of the programme is linked "with the degree of justice that it will inspire in the people and commenting on the protests against the measures noted that "if I were a Greek I might also be in the streets."

He further said that "all must realise the situation and each to assume his own share of responsibility," adding that "you must show that in this national effort all are participating."

[03] Twenty seven baby monk seals born this year in Greek habitats

ANA-MPA/The family of the Mediterranean Monk Seals, more widely known as Monachus monachus, has welcomed 27 new members since the start of the current breeding season, according to the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal (MoM).

The female seals chose the Aegean islands of Kimolos, Tinos, Karpathos and Thasos as well as the mainland coasts of Mani, Evia, Pilio, Argolida and Platamonas to give birth to their pups.ana-mpa

Considering that this year's breeding season will end in a month the new births revive hopes that the Monachus monachus monk seal, listed as critically endangered species, will manage to survive and that more baby seals are yet to be born in the coming days.

The Monachus monachus monk seals are currently threatened with extinction with only 500 individuals known to exist. Half of these are in Greece, where their most important habitats are located.
