  • [01] PM Samaras in Cyprus on Thursday

ANA/MPA---Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Thursday afternoon will go to Cyprus for a working visit. Samaras' visit indicates Greece's support to the Republic of Cyprus and the joint encountering of the difficult situation created by Turkey's aggressive stance.

For Greece, the prevailing condition in the eastern Mediterranean is the result of Turkey's stance which constitutes an insult to the International law and violation of Cyprus Republic's sovereignty rights. The Greek government is looking for the de-escalation of the situation and shows to the world that despite the economic problems, the country remains a factor of stability in the wider area.

On Thursday evening, Samaras will attend a dinner hosted in his honour by Cyprus President Nicos Anastassiades. On Friday at 8:50, Samaras will meet in private with Anastassiades at the Presidential Mansion in Nicosia and afterwards the two leaders will meet with the Cyprus' parliamentary party leaders.

The Greek premier will address the plenum of the House of Representatives at 12:30 after his meeting with the president of Cyprus' parliament Yiannakis Omirou.

Samaras at 14:00 will pay a visit to Cyprus' Archdiocese to meet with Archbishop Chrysostomos. In the afternoon he will depart for Cairo to participate in Greece, Egypt, Cyprus tripartite Summit held on Saturday. The issue of the delimitation of the EEZ between Greece and Egypt is already debated and will also be raised during Samaras' meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Ibrahim Mahleb. According to government's sources, Greece seeks to settle the issue but Egypt has not yet agreed.

Moreover, as Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos said after his meeting with Samaras on Wednesday at the Maximos Mansion, the government is exercising a comprehensive policy on the EEZ issue: "We are concurrently in contact with Egypt, Italy and we have a pending issue with Albania and a long standing open one with Libya...In the last few months, in the last few years we have had a law that the country did not have, the law 4001/2011 on the extreme limits of the continental shelf and of the EEZ. This law has been submitted to the UN and exploration tenders for blocks in the Ionian Sea and south of Crete have been launched. These are the real facts, these are the significant developments," he said.
