    [01] Developments in the Greek economy following the dollar and oil crisis

    The euro's slide , the soaring rate of the american dollar and the sky-high rise in the price of oil threatens to throw off the goverment's 2001 budget calculations .

    Following a meeting with Prime -minister Simitis yest morning, National Economy Minister Yannos Papantoniou described the soaring dollar rate as a circumstantial phenomenon, while undersecr Christos Pachtas stated that the Greek economy would not be affected more than the other EU member states economies.

    Meanwhile, Development Minister Nikos Hristodoulakis announced measures for the relief of the economically weaker groups regarding the increased heating expenses. The amount of the heating allowance is expected to be announced next Wednesday, when the 2001 state budget is tabled in the parliament. It is estimated that about 2.2 million people are elligible to receive the allowance.

    Finally , in its recent quarterly report , the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research says that Greece's economic growth would exceed that of the euro-zone in the years ahead despite the dollar and oil crisis .

    [02] Yannos Papantoniou is in Cyprus to sign a cooperation memorandum

    The Greek Finance Minister Yannos Papantoniou is in Cyprus to sign a cooperation memorandum on economic matters.

    In his statements, Mr. Papantoniou underlined the great importance for the promotion of cooperation between Greece and Cyprus ,especially in view of Cyprus' admission to the the EU. The two countries he stressed have a common european course, that is , Greece's admission to EMU and Cyprus entry into the EU.

    Cyprus admission to the EU, Mr Papantoniou said, will turn a page in the Cyprus issue and will act as a catalyst for a definitive and just solution of the Cyprus problem. To achieve this goal ,political cooperation for a just solution of the Cyprus problem -which is a major national isue for Greece - should be strengthened .

    Mr.Papantoniou will meet today with president Glafkos Kliridis and later will give a speech on the subject: Greece in the EMU and Cyprus in the EU.

    [03] Thessaloniki celebrates the historic anniversary of the ''Oxi Day''

    A student's parade ,to honour Greece's national holiday "Oxi Day " took place in Thessaloniki this morning . The president of the Republic Kostis Stefanopoulos and the country's political and military leadership were present at the parade.

    During a special event ,the major of the city of Thessaloniki will present Mr.Stefanopoulos with the " Golden key of the city .In the evening the Commander of the third Army Corpse will host the traditional dinner in honour of the President of the Republic .

    A military parade tomorrow will end Thessaloniki's three-day celebrations.

    [04] Greek Foreign Minister Giorge Papandreou concluded his contacts in the US

    Greek Foreign Minister Giorge Papandreou concluded contacts in the US with a meeting in Salt Lake City yesterday with the president of the Winter 2002 Olympic Games Organising Committee , Mit Romni.

    Coordination between Athens and Salt Lake City is considered necessary, as the two cities must cooperate on a series of issues and mainly the issue of security.

    Mr. Papandreou also discussed in detail with the governor of California Grey Davis , the issue of the organization of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

    The state of California has the 6th place within the stronger economies worldwide and very high interest for investments in major works such as the ones provided within the framework of the Olympic Games . Mr.Papandreou contacts in California aimed to revive interest for investements in Greece and the Balcans of businessmen of Greek descent
