    [01] General strike on Thursday for Social Security System

    Following angry reactons from Trade Unions and objections from some PASOK senior officials, the government now plans to make some changes to projected reforms in the Social Security System.

    Labor minister Tasos Yannitsis today is starting contacts wth the parties, leaving open the possibility of changing the calculation of pensions as well as retirement age for mothers and heavy professions.

    The General Confederation of Greek Workers and the Civil Servants' Union have so far rejected all invitations for dalogue and are being prepared for the general strike annouced for Thursday. Lawyers throughout the country are starting a three day strike today.

    [02] Olympic Games budget to be ready by June

    Prime minister Costas Simitis has called on the members of the interministerial committee responsible for the 2004 Olympcs to have completed the revision of the Olympic Games budget by June.

    Meanwhile, at yesterday's meeting, it was decided that executives should be hired through a contest to meet the Olympic Games organization needs and a special work team was set up to deal with the use of the Olympic installations after 2004.

    For this reason ministers Yiannos Papantoniou, Evagelos Venizelos and Vaso Papandreou are to meet within the coming days.

    Meanwhile, the Vice President of the International Olympics Committee Zacques Rogue, who is expected in Greece on May 2, has sent a letter to the Secretary General of the Culture ministry Mr. Karpalis expressing his statisfaction over the course of the works.

    [03] Greek-Turkish meeting on military confidence building measures

    A new round of consultations between the Greek and the Turkish delegations is scheduled to resume today in Brussels, on miltary confidence building measures, to be chaired by the NATO Secretary General George Robertson.

    In the meantime, a meeting between women from Greece and Turkey is taking place in Constaninople so that pressure may be exerted to the governments of both countries for an overall solution of their differences.

    [04] Cyprus issue

    During his visit to Cyprus, the Israeli Foreign minister Simon Perez expressed his wish for Cyprus to become a country similar to Switzerland so that countries with differences could meet for discussions there.

    Besides, referring to the bilateral relations between Israel and Cyprus Mr. Perez stressed that they were very good.

    Meanwhile, permanent European Union representative Sotos Zakchaios with a demarche to the United Nations Secretary General Koffi Anan for the illegal visit of Turkish Foreign minister Ismail Cem to the occupied territories of Cyprus, warns that Mr. Cem's provocative statements do not help in the resolution of the Cyrpus issue.

    [05] Vartholomeos to visit Hungary

    Following the Hungarian's President Ferenc Mantle' invtation, Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos is arriving in Budapest today to meet with the political and religious leadership.

    Mr. Vartholomeos will be honored by the Hungarian state and the Church with two high dinstictions.

    [06] Pope John Paul II to visit Athens on May 4

    Pope John Paul II, who is expected to pay an official visit to Athens on May 4, is to meet with the President of the Hellenic Republic Costis Stephanopoulos, Prime minister Costas Simitis New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis and Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou.

    [07] Set up of Third Community Support Framework committee

    National Economy undersecretary Christos Pachtas presided a meeting at the National Economy ministry, where the competent committee responsible for outlays of the Third Community Support Framework was set up.

    [08] Papandreou to visit Maroco

    Foreign minister Yiorgos Papandreou is paying an official visit to Maroco today.

    [09] Production of electric power by private companies soon

    The Development ministry is to allow six private companies to produce electric power soon. This decision lies within the framework for the deregulation of the Electricity market.

    [10] Last offers for the selling Olympic Airways on May 14

    Transport minister Christos Verelis has decided to extend the deadline for the submission of offers for the purchase of Olympic Airways by another company following the written demand of three of the four companies interested in the purchase. Thus the deadline for offers was extended to May 14 instead of April 30.

    [11] 84 billion drachmas for National Registry Programme and 2004 Olympics

    The National Land Registry Programme and the progress of works for the Olympic Games were the focus of discussions Greek Public Works and Environment minister Costas Laliotis had in Brussels yesterday.

    Mr. Laliotis presented to the European Commission Greece's claim to be financed for the National Registry Program with 84 billion drachmas from the Third European Union Support Framework.

    [12] Greek Biologists to be awarded

    According to New York Times, Greek Biologists Yiorgos Katsadorakis and Myrsini Malakou will be awarded the Goldman prizes for the Environment in Europe this year.

    [13] 0,25% drop in the General Share Price Index

    The General Share Price Index of the Athens Stock Exchange fell slightly by 0,25% yesterday closing at 3.263,20 points.
