Sunshine is forecast today in Attica and most parts of the country.
Winds north moderate to strong and locally in the Aegean gale force
winds. In Athens temperatures will range from 18-30 degrees Celcius, in
Thessaloniki from 14-29 degrees Celcius and on the islads from 18-28
degrees Celcius.
[02] Meeting of Greek Foreign Minister with his Turkish counterpart
Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and his Turkish counterpart
Ismail Cem met on the Greek island of Samos on Saturday and on the
Turkish resort of Kusadesi on Sunday . The two ministers agreed to set
up a hot-line between them to deal with "issues of an emergency
nature". They also pledged to boost sea and air traffic between the two
countries, work on health and earthquake relief and promote the idea of
the Olympic truce .
[03] Prime-minister Simitis called for the speeding up of the Pasok Party
congress
The Pasok Party is highly concerned over the Prime-minister Kostas
Simitis decision to hold the party's congress 5 months earlier than
initially scheduled . Senior Pasok Party members underline that the
congress should not ignate intra-party disputes ,while the party's
general secretary Kostas Skandalidis stressed that neither Prime-
minister Simitis was a hostage of the Pasok party, nor the Pasok party
hostage of Prime-minister Simitis.
In the meantime, the Pasok Party Executive Office meets on Wednesday to
examine preparations for the cogress. At the same time, the ND Party is
holding talks to decide on whether it should call for early elections,
specially after the recent polls which bring the ND first in peoples'
preference. ND deputy, Dora Bakoyianni expressed the view that the
country needs early elections .
[04] Air Stewards Union work stoppage, ruled illegal
Olympic Airways flights will be carried out without problems today
after the Athens Court ruled as illegal the 3-hour work stoppage
announced by the Air Stewards Union.
[05] University doctors have decided to continue the abstention
University doctors, indefinite abstention from their duties. from their
duties for an indefinite time in protest against a draftbill which bans
them from practicing free-lance profession. In the meantime, IKA
doctors will continue their strike till July 20th.
[06] Partially restored Galatsi water distillation unit
The distillation water unit in Galatsi- which suffered severe damage -
is expected to partially reoperate today. Officials of the Greek Water
Company -EYDAP- appealed to the residents of Attica to limit
consumption of water to avoid a cut in the water supply of the city of
Athens.
[07] Grades of tertiary education candidates with the old system to be
announced today
The grades for tertiary education candidates examined with the former
system of "desmes" will be annouced today. Candidates can also learn
their grades through the Internet at the Education Ministry website .
[08] Some of the credit cards terms ruled illegal
The Athens Supreme Court ruled as illegal 9 terms related to credit
cards set by banks in their cotracts with cosummers.This decision is
expected to bring better ters for credit card holders and open the way
for lower interest rates
[09] ''Niki'' award to former Australian presidents
At a special event in the Old Parliament, in Cambera yesterday, the
Greek-Australian Council awarded the " Niki" prize to former Australian
Presidents ,Goff Wittlam and Malcom Freizer and to present
Prime-inister of South Australia, John Olsen. The "Niki" is an annual
award to distinguished personalities of non-Greek descent who have
offered valuable services to the Greek comunity in Australia and to
Greece3.
[10] Panathinaikos -basketball champion in Greece
Panathinaikos basketball team won this year's championship after
beating Olympiakos 79-63.
[11] Pasok founder 5th anniversary of his death
Events to mark the 5th anniversary of the Pasok party founder Andreas
Papandreou were held throuought the country yesterday.
In their joint message Pasok party presidet Kostas Siitis and the
party's executive office stresses among others Andrea's Papandreou
immense national, social and political contribution to Greece and its
people, underlining that his contribution consisted a permanent
political commitment for the Pasok party.
