The rest of the 400 soldiers vanguard will fly in over the week end to set up a headquarters.In the meantime the Western-backed efforts to avert a new Balcan war suffered a setback yesterday when a FYROM policeman was shot dead in the northwestern town of Tetovo, apparently by a rebel sniper in defiance of a cease fire declared on Sunday. In Brussels, ambassadors of the 19 NATO member countries will meet at about 1000GMT to decide whether to give the green light to sending the full complement of 3,500 troops they have agreed to make available for the former Yiougoslav republic. NATO forces are meant to stay for a lighting 30-day mission to collect weapons due to be surrendered voluntarily by rebels at the end of a six month conflict in return for political reforms favouring the one third ethnic Albanian minority. In an accord signed on Monday, so-called "National Liberation Army" rebels agreed to surrender their weapons in exchange for more constitutionally guaranteed rights. The Skopje government also announced a limited amnesty available to all rebels, except for war criminals or those who refuse to disarm. Under the plan, the NATO force will establish weapons-collection points around the small, land-locked Balkan country to Greeces north. Six Greek army officers will reportedly head for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) today as an advance team for a Greek contingent expected to participate in the NATO mission. [05] Prime-minister Simitis returns from holidays in SifnosPrime-minister Kostas Simitis returns today from his vacation on the island of Sifnos to speed up the organisation of the Pasok party in view of its congress in October.On Monday, Mr.Simitis will meet with the General secretary of the Pasok party Central Committee, Kostas Skandalidis and on Tuesday with a delegation from the Industry Board of Northern Greece. On Thursday he will chair a meeting of the inner cabinet to discuss issues related to education. [06] Economic staff satisfied at the rise of the euroThe governments economic staff appears satisfied at the new rise of the euro which creates more favourable terms for the paying off of public debts and partially reduce the impact from the rise in crude oil.[07] Problems in the supply of oil due to the strike of workers in the Greek Petroleum CompanyThe 48 hour rotating strikes announced by the workers of the Greek Petroleum Company in reaction to the governments decision for the privatisation of the company are expected to create problems in the supply of oil.[08] Garbage collectors suspended strike mobilisationsGarbage collectors have decided to suspend strike mobilisations after the Athens Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos commitment to mediate for the holding of a meeting at the Ministries of Interior and National Economy.[09] ME crisisDeep differences related to the crisis in the ME came out yesterday between Egypt and the US while a senior delegation from Cairo continue efforts to convince American President George Bush to send an observer force to help end violence in the ME.In the meantime, Palestinian sources said yesterday the Israeli army has strenghtened its positions south of the Gaza Strip on the borders with Egypt. The Israeli army has sent an armoured vehicles to station near Rafah, whose one part is Egyptian territory and the other on the self ruled Palestinian territory.
