    [01] The Greek troops to be deployed in FYROM by Sunday

    The biggest part of the Greek troops scheduled to take part in NATO s operation Essential Harvest is leaving for Skopje today.

    The Greek force, which will consist of 350 soldiers, will be deployed at the area of Krivelak. National Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos pointed out that although the operation is going to encounter difficulties and dangers, all necessary measures for the safety of the Greek force had been taken.

    The full NATO force will have been deployed by Sunday and it will start collecting the Albanian rebels arms in the beginning of next week.

    [02] Papandreou-Mitreva meeting

    Foreign minister Yorgos Papandreou assured his FYROM s counterpart Ilinka Mitreva, who is in Athens within the framework of her Balkan tour, that Greece will contribute the outmost to the stabilization of the situation in the region.

    Mrs. Mitreva also met with Prime Minister Costas Simitis, New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis, Coalition of the Left Wing and Progress party leader Nikos Konstantopoulos and the Secretary General of the Greek Communist party Aleka Papariga.

    In the meantime, after Mr. Karamanlis meeting with FYROM Foreign minister New Democracy party spokesman Theodoris Rousopoulos stated that the New Democracy party was supporting stability in FYROM and the dispatch of a military force in Skopje The goal of FYROM Foreign minister s tour is to brief the leaderships of the Balkan states on the peace agreement in Ochrid and the disarmament plan for the Albanian rebels.

    [03] Simitis asks from the government to intensify its efforts

    During a Cabinet meeting yesterday under his Chairmanship, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis asked from his ministers to intensify their efforts and become determined and effective in solving the problems of the Greek society.

    Referring to New Democracy party s criticisms, he said that the government was committed to the mission entrusted to it by the Greek people, adding that the government s work was the answer to the opposition s criticisms.

    [04] Education minister s plans approved by cabinet

    The Greek cabinet met yesterday under Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and discussed mainly Education issues. Education minister Petros Efthimiou got the cabinet s approval for the ministry s plans in the next years concerning the introduction of computer science in schools, the upgrading of Technological Education Institutes and the evaluation of teaching personnel. From his side, New Democracy party spokesman Theodoris Rousopoulos described the ministers proposals as "high-sounding declarations", reiterating his party s proposal for a national dialogue on Education.

    [05] Interior ministry tables bill for the protection of the environment

    The Interior ministry tabled a bill at Parliament yesterday, which aims to achieve the protection of the environment with strict rules as regards open - air advertisements. According to the violators will have to pay fines up to 10 million drachmas, while all open-air advertisements will have to be in Greek.

    [06] Agreement on satellite programme Hellas - Sat signed

    Greek Transport minister Christos Verelis and his Cypriot counterpart Averof Neofitou signed an agreement allowing the operation of the satellite programme Hellas - Sat yesterday. The sponsors of the satellite program are many banks and telecommunications organizations from Greece and Cyprus, as well as many Greek Cypriot companies.

    [07] Conference on the Balkans takes place in Chalkidiki

    A conference for the Balkans is being organized for a second consecutive year under the initiative of the New Democracy party, the Youth of the European Popular party, "the Initiative for Democracy in the Western Balkans" and the Democracy Institute "Konstantinos Karamanlis" in Sithonia, Chalkidiki.

    The sessions of the Conference are to begin tomorrow with a speech delivered by New Democracy party leader and Vice President of the European Popular party Kostas Karamanlis and are going to last until August 29.

    [08] Women s Agricultural Cooperatives from Thrace meet for the first time

    The first meeting of women s Agricultural Cooperatives from Thrace is going to take place in Samothrace today. The meeting entitled "Land, Woman, Thrace" will end on August 26.

    During the meeting there will be an exhibition of products from Thrace, a meeting regarding the women s role in rural development and cultural events.

    The municipality and the organizers are aiming to establish the meeting as an institution and through the various events to connect agricultural tourism with tradition and culture.

    [09] The Balkan youth compete on Music, Arts and Video

    Within the framework of the second Balkan festival, which began in Pieria yesterday and will last until August 28, 300 young people between 18-25 years old will compete on Music, Arts and Video. 45 Greeks will be taking part in the competition, which has been sponsored by ERT-3.
