[02] Bush asks for change of Palestinian leadership

Palestinians and Israeli leaders have expressed strongly differing views on US President George W Bush's long-awaited speech on the Middle East crisis.

Mr Bush urged the Palestinian people to replace Yasser Arafat, who has led them for decades, with a leader "not compromised by terror".

He did not mention Mr Arafat by name, but correspondents say his message was brutally clear.

Most Palestinian leaders were outraged by the speech, although support came from an unexpected corner.

Mr Arafat described the speech as "a serious effort to push the peace process forward".

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's spokesman, Raanan Gissin, welcomed the call for a new Palestinian leader.

Just hours after the speech, Israeli tanks swept into the West Bank city of Hebron sparking clashes with Palestinian gunmen.

Moreover, Mr Bush also threatened to exclude Syria from the peace process if he did not denounce the organisations that according to the USA and Israel are terrorist.

At the same time Mr Bush has asked from Israel to withdraw its forces to its positions prior to 2000 and freeze the creation of new Jewish settlements in the occupied territories and release Palestinian reserves.

From its side Hammas Islamic organisation rejected the American plan, warning that resistance against the Jewish state would continue.

French Foreign Minister Dominque de Vilepen stated that Mr Bush’s positions coincided with the France and the European Union’s positions.

United Nations Secretary General Koffi Anan stated that the issue of the Palestinian leadership concerned only the Palestinian people. He welcomed Mr Bush’s vision for the creation of a Palestinian state that would be bordering with a safe Israel. In tandem he denounced the new Israeli operations in the West Bank.

[03] Illegal immigrants continue entering Greece

In an interview with the newspaper “Ta Nea”, Public Order Minister Chrysohoides stated that Greece had reached its limit in absorbing economic immigrants. As he said, Greece is hosting 700.000 legal immigrants presently and unless some measures are taken then they will not be able to be incorporated in the society harmoniously. He also stated that this issue creates tension in Greek-Turkish relations and underlines that Athens will take all necessary measures with the European Union if Turkey does not meet its obligations regarding the return of illegal immigrants back to the country of their origin.

Meanwhile, three Turkish slave traders will appear before the public prosecutor for carrying 51 illegal immigrants to the islet of Piperi south east of Kythnos. Presently, the illegal immigrants are being hosted in Syros.

    [04] Papandreou to meet Cem

On the sidelines of the meeting of Black Sea cooperation, Foreign Minister Giorgos Papandreou will meet with his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cemin Constaninople in the afternoon.

In the meantime, the fourth round of exploratory contacts between Greece and Turkey on a level of Secretary Generals of the Foreign Ministry is beginning.

Besides, within the framework of face to face talks on the Cyprus issue, the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash are having a new meeting now at the presence of Mr Alvaro del Soto.

This is the first meeting following Mr Denktash’s statements according to which the Greek side tried to cause the collapse of the negotiations last week.

Mr Klerides stated that the talks had reached a deadlock due to the insistence of the Turkish side for the existence of two different states.
