    [02] Local government elections

Addressing the ruling Pasok party s parliamentary group yesterday, Prime-minister Kostas Simitis issued an indirect invitation to all progressive citizens and leftists parties to present a united front against right wing movements in next Sunday s local government elections. Mr. Simitis launched a strong attack against the main opposition N.D accusing it of cooperation with the extreme right wing, and cultivation of a polarisation climate. He also accused the conservative N.D party of political opportunism and lack of program.

In reply , N.D party leader , Kostas Karamanlis accused the government of following division tactics and a black propaganda fabricating imaginative and extreme scenaria.

Meanwhile, tempers were frayed , as unregistered voters were obliged to queue again yesterday for information about how and where they could cast their ballots . The government reiterated charges that Athens city Hall was to blame for confusion about electoral districts , but the mayor , Dimitris Avramopoulos , insisted that the government was exclusively responsible for any procedures relating to elections.
