    An unsettled day is forecast with rain and storms gradually improving throughout the day. Winds variable, moderate to strong. In Athens temperatures will range between 17 to 22 C and in Thessaloniki between 15 to 19C.

    [02] Local government elections &#8211; first round of elections

    Today , the day after the first round in local government elections, all political parties are trying to interpret the voters message in order to determine their stand in the runoff elections next Sunday.

    According to Interior Ministry data so far, 620 majors and 16 prefects are being elected in yesterday s first round of two-stage elections. Candidates must win 50% of the vote or go to runoff elections next Sunday between the top two vote winners.

    The majors of the two major cities of Attica and the Athens-Pireus hyper prefect will be elected in next Sunday s runoff elections. The ruling Pasok party candidate for the Athens-Pireus prefecture Fofi Gennimata is in the lead with 39,7% of the votes followed by N.D s candidate Yiannis Tzannetakos with 27,1% and extreme right wing candidate Giorgos Karatzaferis with 13,7%, .

    In the battle for Athens major , N.D s candidate , Dora Bakoyianni has collected 47,5% of the votes followed by Pasok party candidate Hristos Papoutsis with 25,9% , Diki candidate , Dimaras with 11% , Kouvelis 6% and Halvatzis 6%.

    In northern Greece, N.D candidate , Psomiadis with 50,3% of the votes was elected Thessaloniki prefect in the first round of elections with Pasok party candidate Xatzisavvas collecting 34,1% of the votes. Also former Thessaloniki major was re-elected from the first round collecting 54,2% of the votes while Pasok party candidate Bouyias collected 27,9% of the votes.

    Elections went off smoothly despite problems in the past few days with a mix up in the electoral rolls .Interior Minister ,Kostas Skandalidis expressed his satisfaction with all procedures , calling on voters to attend the same polling stations next Sunday with the same sense of responsibility.

    Commenting on the elections , Prime-minister Simitis stressed their local character , saying that candidates would be voted for, who had a plan to promote development on a local scale and who had the ability to implement such plans . Opposition N.D leader Kostas Karamanlis also said that those who could guarantee a better local government would be voted for.

    Reduced consumption tax for heating oil goes in effect as of today , bringing heating oil price down to 31-35 cents per litter.

    [04] Olympic Airways stoppage -illegal

    The 4-hour stoppage announced for tomorrow by the Olympic Airways pilots has been declared illegal by the Athens court.

    One Greek injured and one missing are among the 183 victims of the bomb explosions on the holiday island of Bali , in Indonesia.
