    A fine day is forecast for today. Winds northerly moderate to strong and locally in the south-eastern Aegean very strong.

    In Athens temperatures will range between 15 to 24 C and in Thessaloniki between 12 to 20 C .

    [02] Round-off local elections

    In the final round of two stage local government elections the Pasok party won the Athens-Pireus hyper-prefecture while the main opposition N.D party won the municipalities of the three major cities , Athens , Pireus and Thessaloniki.

    Socialist Pasok party candidate Fofi Gennimata won the race for Athens &#8211;Pireus hyper &#8211;prefect and in the high profile battle for the Athens municipality, the conservative N.D party candiadate Dora Bakoyianni , won the municipality of Athens.

    With votes counted so far, the N.D party has won 26 of the 46 prefectures , the Pasok party 12 and the Pasok with the cooperation of the Coalition of the Left 7 prefectures .

    In municipalities with over 20 thousand inhabitants , 45 majors supported by the ND party have been elected so far , 30 supported by the Pasok party, 11 supported by both the Pasok and the Coalition of the Left , 3 by the Coalition of the Left while the Greek Communist party and the Democratic Movement have won in one municipality each.

    In his statements last night Prime-minister Simitis said that there were no losers or winners in these elections as Greek people voted with the criterion which candidate was best for their city and prefecture rejecting these elections as a referendum for or against the government.

    The N.D leader, Kostas Karamanlis said the N.D party had proved it was the country s strongest political force stressing that his party in the post of the oppostion today and taking power in the future will cooperate with all Greek people.

    Athens Pireus hyper-prefect elect, Fofi Gennimata said that all together would work hard to solve daily problems of the citizens while newly elected major of Athens Dora Bakoyianni said she was major of all Athenians with her only rival the problems of the city.

    [03] Prime-minister Simitis to visit E.U member states

    Prime-minister Simitis is scheduled to visit France, Italy and Germany in order to prepare the ground in view of Cyprus admission to the E.U while on Thursday , he will fly to Brussels to attend an extraordinary E.U summit .

    The government s economic staff begins today the examination of procedures for the introduction of value added tax on new houses, the increase in objective value of property and the imposition of a commom tax Final decisions will be taken in November .

    [05] Public Order Minister to meet with Washingthon officials

    Public Order Minister , Mihalis Hrisohoidis is preparing to depart for an official visit to Washingthon this week where he will have a series of meetings with American officials focusing on the combat of international terrorism and organised crime.

    In the meantime the U.S House of Representatives has passed a resolution praising Greece for dismantling the November 17 urban guerrilla group and its contribution to the international coalition against terrorism .
