[02] Simitis to brief political party leaders on Brussels Summit

Prime Minister Costas Simitis is briefing today political party leaders on the results of the Brussels Summit meeting and the Cyprus issue.

Mr Simitis is meeting with the New Democracy party President Costas Karamanlis at 12:00, the Secretary General of the Greek Communist party Aleka Papariga at 13:30 and the Synaspismos party leader Nikos Konstantopoulos.

In an interview with NET 105.8, Foreign Minister spokesman Panayiotis Beglitis referred to the possibility of the United Nations Secretary General to announce his decisions on the solution of the Cyprus issue by the end of the week, adding that such a plan does not exit yet.

However, he also added that Greece and Cyprus have many times reiterated that the solution of the Cyprus issue must be compatible with the European Union vested legislation and be based on the creation of a bizonal and bicommunal confederation.

Meanwhile, the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides pointed out that no European Council decision is affecting Cyprus’ European course, while everyone takes it for granted that Cyprus will be acceded to the European Union in December.

He also underlined that in Copenhagen, where the Danish Presidency briefed the leaders of the countries to be acceded, noone referred to the solution of the Cyprus issue.

Mr Klerides also said that the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan h as not decided when to submit his plan of the resolution of the Cyprus issue.

The Socialist Democrat Movement President Dimitris Tsovolas accused the government of a new circle of concessions on national issues and on agricultural policy and the New Democracy party of tolerating the government policy.

Finally, government spokesman Christos Protopapas stated that the text prepared in Brussels for the Euroforce fully secures Greek national interests, while the Greek farmers’ interests are secured with the decisions taken at the summit.

    [03] Chechen leading official arrested

According to BBC, a leading official of the Chechen Government has been arrested in Denmark at Russia's request, Danish police have said.

Ahmed Zakayev, an envoy of Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov and the region's deputy Prime Minister, was detained in Copenhagen where he was attending a world congress of Chechens, officials said.

He is suspected by Russia of being involved in last week's siege by Chechen rebels of a theatre in Moscow, according to Danish television.

The Russians were furious with the Danes for allowing the conference to go ahead.

Reports of Mr Zakayev's arrest came as police in Moscow detained 30 people, including security officials and political advisers, believed to have helped the Chechen rebels.

[05] ASE ends higher yesterday despite international downward trends

After the announcement regarding the reduction of consumption confidence in the USA, all international Stock Markets followed a downward trend reaching the lowest point during the last nine years. However, the Athens Stock Exchange rose by 0.70% yesterday.

Meanwhile, reducing unemployment and inflation will be the two main priorities of the government's economic policy in 2003, Economy and Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis said on Tuesday.

Addressing a conference on ''Economy Policy and Development'', Mr Christodoulakis noted that the unemployment rate, despite falling to single-digit, remained relatively high while inflation was still above the average community rate.

The Greek minister predicted that the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) would rise by 3.8 percent this year and slightly below an initial target of 4.1 percent in 2003 because of negative international economic conditions.

Christodoulakis estimated that inflation would gradually fall in 2003 from current levels.

Mr Christodoulakis is going to meet with Prime Minister Costas Simitis today to discuss the course of the national economy and European fiscal policy.
