[03] Commencement of proximity talks in Nicosia

Proximity talks commenced in Nicosia today for the solution of the Cyprus issue. United Nations special envoy Alvaro de Soto met with the President of the Cyprus Republic Glafkos Klerides and discussed about the Greek-Cypriot side's reactions to Turkish-Cypriot Rauf Denktash' s answer to Mr Annan.

At the same time, during Prime Minister Costas Simitis' meeting with his Italian counterpart Silvio Berlusconi in Rome yesterday, both men proved to have identical views on the solution of the Cyprus issue and the fixing of date for the beginning of accession negotiations between Turkey and the EU.

They stated that Turkey's accession negotiations should begin on January 1 2004.

Mr Simitis also stressed that Ankara's stance on the solution of the Cyprus issue will constitute a condition for fixing a date for the beginning of negotiations between Turkey and the European Union.

From his side, the Turkish-Cypriot representative Rauf Denktash maintained that if Cyprus was acceded during the Copenhagen summit meeting, then the continuation of negotiations for the Cyprus issue would be impossible.
