    A cloudy day is forecast with local rains and snow on high ground. Winds nortrherly, northeasterly, moderate to strong in the west, central and northern parts of the country and westerly in the rest of the country. Temperatures in Athens will range between 6C to 14 C and in Thessaloniki between 3C to 9C.

    [02] Cabinet meeting-Bank of Greece governor report

    At a meeting of the inner cabinet yesterday, focusing on the repercussions of a possible war against Iraq, Prime-minister Simitis said there was no need for emergency measures to be taken for the economy. He warned against being swept along by a climate of panic and called for solidarity among ministers.

    Finance Minister, Nikos Hristodoulakis underlined that development and anti- inflation policies must be accelerated . He left open the possibility of financial assistance for low-income pensioners if required and announced the introduction of part time work in the public sector to boost employment. Hristodoulakis also ruled any rise above the inflation rate in utility bills.

    The cabinet meets again today to discuss the 3rd community support framework.

    In his annual monetary policy report, the governor of the Bank of Greece, Nikos Garganas has predicted a high growth in the economy and inflation rate held at last years level about, 3,6%.

    [03] Unresolved Cyprus issue hampers Greece- Turkey normalisation of relations

    Prime-minister Simitis said yesterday that as long as the Cyprus issue remained unresolved there could not be normalisation of Greece s relations with Turkey and its European prospects would remain dim, underlining that there would be no delay in Cyprus accession to the EU.

    The ND party, President, Kostas Karamanlis stressed the need for continuation of efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue and called on the Prime-minister to abandon his views that the UN peace plan was the last option.

    [04] State hospital doctors and taxi drivers on strike today

    State hospitals will operate on skeleton staff today accepting only emergency cases as doctors stage a 24 hour strike.

    Cab drivers in Athens are also staging a 24 hour strike, starting from 5am today, demanding to be allowed to drive in newly constructed bus lanes.
