    It will be sunny in the beginning of the day with scattered cloud, rain and thunderstorms on high ground in the north from afternoon. Winds north-northeasterly, light to strong. The temperature in Athens will range from 20 to 31C and in Thessaloniki from 19 to 29C.

    [02] Chirac praises Greek EU Presidency

    During their warm meeting yesterday, current EU President Prime Minister Costas Simitis and the French President Jacques Chirac expressed their wish for a text of consent to be agreed upon for the Constituent Assembly during the sessions of the imminent EU meeting in Thessaloniki, which will constitute a framework of discussions for the Intergovernmental conference.

    The French President Jacques Chirac expressed appreciation for the ''masterly way'' with which the Greek European Union presidency has handled the EU's affairs so far.

    Referring to the Constituent Assembly, Mr. Chirac stated that the Constitution plan will be presented and discussed in Thessaloniki, where the Greek government's capabilities will be required for a final agreement.

    Mr Simitis, from his side stated that the new European Constitution would have to be ready before the 2004 Euro elections, so that the European citizens may know what they are voting for.

    Earlier, referring to the Community's Constitution, European Assembly President Valery Giscard d'Estaing stated that a basis of consent should be found within the Assembly for the benefit of Europe's future.

    [03] EU &#8211; USA judicial agreement to be signed

    EU current President Prime Minister Costas Simitis is visiting Washington on 25 June to meet with American President George W. Bush to sign a document for the judicial cooperation between the EU and the USA that had been agreed by the Justice Ministers Committee.

    Justice Minister Philipos Petsalnikos stated that the agreement would not repeal the existing bilateral agreements, but on the contrary complement and boost them with additional guarantees for the protection of human rights.

    From his side Press Minister Christos Protopapas stated that the extradition of Greek citizens, as well as of 17N terrorist organisation members would not be allowed.

    Meanwhile, in an interview with NET 105.8 a member of the Greek negotiating team of the Greek Presidency for the agreement Thanos Papaioannou stated that the extradition agreement does not criminalize any offence, adding that for each member state valid are the bilateral agreements with the USA.

    He also said that the Euro American agreement guarantees that even if a death penalty is imposed, it will not be put into practice.

    Finally, in an interview with our station, Euro Deputy Alekos Alavanos referred to the angered reaction of the European Parliament and a bad epilogue of the Greek Presidency.

    [04] Simitis agrees with slashing of interest rates

    Prime Minister Costas Simitis described the decision of the European Central Bank to slash interest rates by half a percentage point positive.

    Eurobank, from its side announced the decrease of the interest rate of its housing programme Eurohome European from 4.5% to 4%. Other banks are expected to implement the same policy.

    [05] Turkey violates Greek airspace repeatedly

    During a military exercise yesterday, 25 Turkish war plans violated the Greek airspace 145 times. In seven cases, the Turkish jet fighters reacted to the interception of the Greek aircrafts, development that led to equal engagements.

    Five Turkish jet fighters were armed with air-to-air missiles.
