The government is striving for the acceleration of privatisations, the de-escalation of public debt and the invigorating of the market climate.

Meanwhile, following his consecutive meetings with government officials, Prime Minister Costas Simitis decided to table at Parliament in the coming days the bill regarding Olympic Airways and the merging of the Post Office Savings Bank with the Bank of Attica.

The amendment of the bill regarding the purchase of electric power foresees the creation of a third electricity production unit by private individuals with the participation of the Public Power Corporation (DEI) with 50% of its power. [04] Shipowners demand abolishment of interventionism

The Shipowners Association has asked for the substantial release of coastal trade from any kind of interventionism.

Besides, the Panhellenic Nautical Federation will obstruct the departure of passenger ship 'Nisos Limnos' from Lavrio port and stage a strike at all ports.

The Shipowners Association President Stelios Sarris asked for the total deregulation of sea freights, adding that this should take place as of 1/1/2004, demanding thus the amendment of Mr Papoutsis' law.

Shipowners are blaming the government and the ex- Mercantile Marine Minister George Anomeritis for not keeping their promises regarding the pay of discounts by the Mercantlie Marine Ministry for port employees and the Ministry of National Defence for militaries. Until now no decision has been taken for shipowners so as they receive the money owed to them.

Additionally, shipowners stated that they demand the amendment of the relative decree, so as the structure of crews depend on the technical characteristics of ships.
