(6/11/2003 8:51:00 μμ) [02] Bishops vote to ease tensions with Ecumenical PatriarchateIn a tense atmosphere, the majority of Greek bishops voted today in favour of proposals submitted by Archbishop Christodoulos, to facilitate an easing of the crisis with the Constantinople-based Ecumenical Patriarchate. Of the 63 metropolitan bishops, 50 approved a proposal to send the Patriarch a list containing the name of only the candidate bishops for the disputed dioceses in northern Greece.(6/11/2003 8:56:00 μμ) [03] Radical changes in armed forcesThe Foreign Affairs and Defence Council today decided unanimously on radical changes in the military. Troops stationed in the northern Evros border and in the Aegean will be boosted; battle units in Epirus and Macedonia will be abolished; the number of high-ranking officers will be reduced, and all old weapons systems will be disposed of, so that the sum of 250,000 euros will be saved annually.(6/11/2003 9:03:00 μμ) [04] FBI delegation to arrive in AthensA delegation of high-ranking FBI officers, headed by Robert Miller, is expected to arrive in Athens tonight. The FBI chief will have talks with the leadership of the Public Order Ministry and the Greek police, on the subject of security for the teams and visitors during the 2004 Olympic Games in the Greek capital next August. Meanwhile, the main opposition New Democracy leader Costas Karamanlis described the Games as a national challenge and accused the government of fiscal ineptness, inability to execute the budget, a soaring deficit and over-inflated loans.(6/11/2003 9:14:00 μμ) [06] Protocol ratified in Athens for Bulgaria's NATO accessionIn the presence of Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov ' who is presently visiting Greece ' parliament today ratified a protocol providing for the accession of seven new countries to NATO, including Bulgaria. Earlier, Parvanov met with parliamentary speaker Apostolos Kakamanis, with whom it was agreed that the parliaments of both countries will support inter-Balkan cooperation and will promote a regional organization for parliamentary collaboration.(6/11/2003 9:20:00 μμ) [07] Greeks xenophobic, insecure and distrustful of politiciansAccording to a survey carried out by the National Centre for Social Research, Greeks on the whole are xenophobic, religious, insecure and distrustful of politicians.
