Israel, facing a World Court hearing over its contentious barrier in the West Bank, plans cosmetic changes to its route, political sources said today.

On the issue of the Parthenon Marbles, the director of the British Museum where the invaluable sculptures are on display was particularly aggressive and provocative in an article published in The Sunday Times. Neil McGregor maintained that Greek authorities essentially continued the work of Lord Elgin, who had removed the sculptures from the Athens Acropolis in the early 18th century. He added that the issue was being exploited for pre-election purposes , in an effort to eliminate any hope of the Marbles return to Athens.

In the opposition New Democracy camp, the conservative partys political council is convening this evening, chaired by party leader Costas Karamanlis, to discuss pre-election methods and the drawing-up of candidacy lists. This afternoon, Karamanlis addressed a group of young business people, presenting his partys position on education, taxations and the stock exchange.

Political events continue to focus on pre-election campaigns. In the ruling Pasok party, Prime Minister Costas Simitis is set for successive meetings tomorrow, in view of further tours of country, while in the evening, he will address an event organized by the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Meanwhile, George Papandreous staff is beginning a new round of meetings to decide on the next initiatives by Pasoks candidate leader. Tomorrow, Papandreou will tour Lavrio.

The Americans want to ensure European Union accession for Turkey, through a Cyprus solution, stressed Communist Party General Secretary Aleka Papariga, following her meeting today with the Cypriot president. She added that positive developments in the Cyprus issue were not underway.

Immediately after his meeting with visiting Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, Prime Minister Costas Simitis used tough language to describe Ankaras stance to date on the Cyprus issue. At the meeting which was also attended by Foreign Minister George Papandreou it was decided that the Greek and Greek-Cypriot side will insist on a dialogue between the two parties, within a United Nations framework, based on the re-unification plan by Secretary General Kofi Annan
