  • [01] Worries Over Fate of Greek Sailor Tragedy at Ghana's Port

18 people died a tragic death trapped in the flames, most of the them crew members on board the Greek-registered ship MV Polaris, where a blaze broke out last night, while it was being repaired at Ghana's major port, Tema. The 17-crew of MV Polaris includes one Greek, one Russian, one sailor from Guinea, as well as 14 men from Ghana. According to the French Press Agency, authorities managed to recover 15 burnt bodies, all crew, which have not been identified yet. The other two crew members managed to save themselves jumping off the ship at the last minute. Their identities have not been publicized, and therefore it is not known if the Greek sailor is one of the two survivors. The state TV broadcast that the bodies of three more man, other than the 15 crew, were recovered from the destroyed vessel.

    Swallowed by Fire

The blaze broke out yesterday morning at 09.00 (local time) on the MV Polaris, which had docked for minor repair work. The Police suspect the blaze began when a spark from welding work set fire to oil leaking from a pipe. Rescue crews and the Fire Brigade rushed to the scene and managed to set the fire under control late at night.

However, information on the number of victims remains confused. Ghanaian Ports Minister Ameyaw-Akumfi said nine people were confirmed dead and added that all human beings on board are feared dead. According to Ghana's radio, port authorities have already recovered 15 bodies, while the state TV raised the number of victims to 18. Pipelines leading to Ghana's only oil refinery, 18km from the capital, have been damaged by the blaze, but Mr Ameyaw-Akumfi says there are enough strategic supplies to avoid any short-term problems.

[03] Fireworks Cost Him His Life

    26 Mar 2005 10:36:00

    By Tina Valaoura

The custom of Easter fireworks proved to be fatal for the life of one Italian. The unfortunate man was carrying the fireworks in his scooter, when for yet unknown reasons he collided with a parked car near a church in Fuorigrotta, Naples, resulting in a very powerful explosion. The tragic incident cost him his life, while a 13year-old pillion passenger was seriously injured. At least three passers-by are hospitalized in a critical condition, while nearby cars sustained damages from the blast. Originally, Italian media said it was a terrorist attack, given that lately Naples is shaken by violent incidents between Mafia gangs. The Police however have rejected this eventuality, saying that the fireworks were most probably destined for Easter celebrations.

    By Tina Valaoura

Only 24 hours have passed since the bloody attack in Ramadi, during which 11 Iraqi commandos were killed, and a new suicide attack with a booby-trapped car was reported today, this time in Baghdad. The suicide bomber driving the car aimed at a US army patrol in a southwestern part of the capital. Two US soldiers lost their lives to the blast, thus elevating the US death toll since the invasion in Iraq to 1523. Yesterday, another US soldier was reported dead during operations in Anbar.

    No End to Violence

Yesterday, two more Iraqis were killed and 24 were injured in two suicide attacks that occurred in streets leading to the sacred city of Kerbala. According to police sources, the target was Iraqi security posts. However, the majority of the victims were Shia pilgrims on their way to Kerbala, 110km southwest of Baghdad, for the Sunday celebration of the 40th day of Assura, in remembrance of the death of Imam Hussein in 680.

Lastly, according to a source inside the Iraqi ministry of Internal Affairs, five Iraqi women working at the US base of Rostamiya in southeastern Baghdad, dropped dead yesterday when unknown men opened fire at their vehicle.
