Police arrested more than 100 protesters in the Indonesian capital
yesterday during a rally over fuel price rises. According to police
protesters threw fuel bombs and burned tyres on the streets. Some 26
protesters, who rallied outside the presidential palace at midnight on
Friday, when the price rise came into effect, were also arrested. Hike
in fuel price came after the governments decision to cut fuel subsidy
by 28.7%, a move that is more likely to have a negative impact on
inflation. As a countermeasure, Indonesias government plans to grant an
allowance to low-income population, whose total sum mounts up to 1.5
billion euros. Many demonstrations were staged during the week in
protest against rises in fuel and food prices while a new demonstration
will be held on Saturday.
