127 athletes have sent an appeal-letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao, requesting the respect of human rights, freedom of expression and religious freedom especially in Tibet. In parallel, they are requesting that human rights defenders are not intimidated or imprisoned. The letter, which was made public by then non-governmental organisation Sports for Peace, reads that that as all eyes are turned to China, the presidents decision on these issues will determine the success of the Olympic Games and Chinas profile. Out of the 127 athletes 40 will compete in Beijing.
