    Clashes Continue

    11 Αυγ 2008 08:20:00

The international community is gravely concerned over continuing clashes in Caucasus. According to Interfax news agency, the commander of Russian peacekeeping forces said that Georgia continues shelling Tskhinvali, capital of South Ossetia despite claims of having pulled out its troops. "There was fierce fighting in some of the conflict zones during the night" said Marat Kulahmentov, who maintains that Georgian forces continue mounting fresh attacks against Russian positions. In the meantime Russia has boosted its forces in Abkhazia, a second rebel region of Georgia, and now has more than 9,000 paratroopers and 350 armour there, Interfax news agency quoted an aide to the commander of Russian peacekeepers as saying on Monday. "The strengthening of the peacekeeping force is aimed at ruling out a repetition of the situation Russian peacekeepers faced in Tskhinvali," Alexander Novitsky was quoted as saying. At the same time, Georgia Foreign Ministry announced that Russian forces shelled a military base and a radar installation near Tbilisi at the early hours today. The explosions were felt in the Georgian capital. Russian Air Force spokesman refused to make any comments to the French news agency saying that the chief of staff of Russian armed forces, Anatoli Novagitsin will make official announcements at 13:00 Moscow time( 12:00 Greek time) during a press interview in Moscow.
