  • [01] Performance of Greek Athletes on Day 10

    18 Αυγ 2008 20:22:00

Day 10 of the Beijing Olympics ended with mixed feelings for the Greek Olympic team. The national basketball team succeeded in making it to the next round, while Papadopoulou earned her participation in the Womens Hammer Throw final, and sailors Pashalides and Trigonis stand good chances to claim a medal. Louis Tsatoumas, on the other hand, failed to advance to the Mens Long Jump final.

Performing brilliantly in the first half, the Greek basketball team downed China 91-77. The hosts tried to threaten the Greek side in the second half, but their efforts yielded no result. The third victory claimed by Giannakis boys earned them third place in Group B. Greece will now play against Argentina.

In the Mens 400m Hurdles final, Periklis Iakovakis of Greece finished eighth. The USA swept all three medals. Angelo Taylor, Kerron Clement and Bershawn Jackson won gold, silver and bronze medals with times of 47.25s, 47.98s, and 48.06s respectively.

In the Long Jump, Greek champion Louis Tsatoumas was rather disappointing, as he was eliminated after three failed jumps.

Furthermore, Iordanis Pashalides and Kostas Trigonis are too close to claim a Tornado medal. The Greek crew finished second in the fifth race, twelfth in the sixth and fourth in the seventh, ranking third in the general standings. In windsurfing, Nikos Kaklamanis rose to sixth place in the general standings, after landing 15th place in the eighth race and tenth in the ninth. In Womens RS:X, Antonia Frai ranks 14th, after finishing ninth in the eight race and 15th in the ninth. In the Mens Laser, Vaggelis Himonas ranks 15th.

Although Nikos Kourtides performance in weightlifting beat all expectations, the Greek 105kg weightlifting champion failed to reach the final eight. Having been prepared for only a month and a half, the 22yo Greek champion lifted 221kg in the Clean and Jerk followed by 176kg in the Snatch and finished tenth in A Group.

In the Womens Hummer Throw, Greek champion Stella Papadopoulou succeeded in advancing to the finals, after earning sixth place in the preliminaries. Alexandra Papageorgiou, on the other hand, failed to make it to the finals.

In the Mens 100m Hurdles, Greek champion Kostas Douvalides earned a place in the finals, while Dimitris Tsiamis failed to make it to the finals of the Mens Triple Jump final. Finally, the Greek men water polo team sustained yet another defeat. It lost 10-6 to Spain and landed fifth place in Group A.

The bill concerning former Conservative Aegean Minister Aristotelis Pavlides never reached Parliament, Parliament Speaker Dimitris Sioufas told reporters. That happened, because according to the investigation conducted by the Supreme Court Vice Prosecutor Athanasios Kontaksis, following accusations on wrongdoing during Pavlides term, no criminal offences had been committed, explained Pavlides. The issue has triggered reactions by the opposition parties, while the Justice Minister said that no complaints had been filed against Pavlides.
