Minor incidents took place at the port of Patra at noon during an anti-racist demonstration. Tension was created when activists, who have been participating in three-day events in support of Afghan immigrants living in Patra tried to protest in the port area and clashed with the police. The police used tear gas and the protesters then left. It is worth mentioning that immigrants have died of asphyxiation in Patra in the past when they remained hidden in trucks in an attempt to escape arrest. Moreover, clashes among foreigners of different nationality have caused concern and tension to the local society.

    G. Souflias Visits Tempi

    31 Αυγ 2008 19:08:00

Within the framework of his tour to Northern Greece, Environment Minister George Souflias visited Tempi, where T2 tunnel is under construction. The minister appeared happy over the construction of the tunnel because no more blood of our fellow citizens will be shed on the highway there. He referred to the accident in which 21 children from Makrochori, Imathia had been killed on 13 April 2003.

He also referred to the construction of the 1,900-metre long T1 tunnel at Evangelismos-Tempi and the 3.200-metre long T3 tunnel, connecting Platamonas with Skotina.

Mr Souflias also referred to the upgrading and maintance of the Athens-Thessaloniki Regional highway. The cost of the 230-kilometre long highway will amount to 1.3 billion euros and will be completed in 54 months. The above projects, in combination of the completion of works at the Maliakos Gulf highway will constitute the Athens-Thessaloniki highway a modern motorway of European standards, said the minister.
