Jakarta: Jakarta: Suicide Bombers Checked in as Hotel GuestsNews
Noordin Mohammad Top, an alleged organizer of the 2002 Bali bombings in 2005, is widely suspected to be responsible for the blasts in Ritz-Carlton and Marriot hotels in the center of Jakarta. The twin attacks which killed 9 people and injured 60 have given rise to international outcry.
Police said the bombers had checked in to the Marriott as paying guests on Wednesday and had assembled the bombs in their room. A third bomb was found and defused in a laptop computer bag on the 18th floor. Indonesia's television showed closed-circuit television footage of a man they said was the Ritz-Carlton's suspected suicide bomber. He was wearing a baseball cap and pulling a wheelie-bag through the lobby. Suicide bombers struck the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton, two luxury hotels popular with businessmen and diplomats, in Jakarta's main business district during breakfast. Seven foreigners were among those killed in the bomb attacks. Australian authorities said they are concerned over the fate of three Australian citizens, among them a diplomat, who are missing since the blasts.
Indonesian antiterrorist authorities suspect Jemaah Islamiah or a splinter, blamed for a previous Marriott attack as well as bombings on the island of Bali in2002 that killed 202 people, to be responsible for Friday's blasts as the attacks bear the group's hallmarks, the choice of high-profile Western targets where the victims are likely to be foreigners.
UN Secr. Gen Ban Ki moon and US president Barrack Obama condemned the terrorist attacks and expressed certainty that the culprits would face justice.
