Turkish Cypriot leader - Talks - Statements

    by Maria Myles

New York, Sep 19 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said he will not be having a meeting with UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto on Tuesday because the UN official "is otherwise engaged."

Denktash, who was in his public statements as intransigent on his positions as ever, said he would have his next meeting with de Soto on Wednesday, and repeated his demand that a Cyprus settlement should start from the so- called realities on the island and then a solution can be found "very quickly."

Cyprus proximity talks - UN moves

    by Maria Myles

New York, Sep 19 (CNA) -- The UN moves on the Cyprus question within its long standing philosophy on the issue, which they have adopted for years now and which, according to some assessments, relates to the establishment of a federation in Cyprus with some kind of peculiarities.

Well informed sources have expressed this view, noting also that the UN approach to the issue of territory, one of the core issues under discussion at the UN-led proximity talks that got underway here last week, could allow the return of more Greek Cypriot refugees to their homes than an earlier UN set of ideas in 1992 would have done.

[03] Cyprus Foreign Minister - New York - Meetings

by Maria Myles New York, Sep 19 (CNA) -- The Cyprus issue and the Republic's European Union accession course were part of the discussions Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides had here Monday with his Irish and German counterparts, Brian Cowen and Joscka Fischer.

A spokesman for Ireland's permanent mission to the UN told CNA after the meeting that "the two ministers reviewed matters of mutual concern" and noted it "reflected the very close ties between the two countries."

[04] Russian Cyprus envoy - Peace talks

by Maria Myles New York, Sep 19 (CNA) -- Russia's envoy to the fourth round of UN-led Cyprus peace talks, Vladimir Tchizhov, has stressed that a viable and right solution in Cyprus should be found within the talks and on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions and two high level agreements, providing for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

He also said no-one expects a miracle in this round of talks which got underway last week and described the Cyprus question as "rather complicated" in which every development take place through persistent efforts of those engaged in the talks.
