[01] National Council convenes

The National Council convened yesterday for the first time since the Parliamentary elections of May 27, enlarged to include representatives of the new parties elected to the House of Representatives.

Speaking after the four-hour meeting, Government Spokesman, Michalis Papapetrou, said the top advisory body on the Cyprus problem had discussed developments in the effort to reach a solution as well as Cyprus' course for accession to the European Union, in view of Turkish threats if Cyprus joins before a settlement.

He said the Council would reconvene on 26 June to continue the discussions.

Each party represented in the House is entitled to sit on the National Council with its leader and one or two other members.

[02] Financial agreement signed with Czech Republic

An agreement was signed between Cyprus and the Czech Republic for the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments.

Finance Minister, Takis Clerides, signed the agreement on behalf of Cyprus during an official visit to the Czech Republic.

The agreement is expected to contribute to the promotion of bilateral economic relations between the two countries in general and the creation of a climate conducive to investor activities.
